• What are squirrels?

Pennsylvania  is home to the Eastern Gray Squirrel and the Southern Flying Squirrel. Eastern gray squirrels are 6 to 8 inches long and usually gray in color with white underbellies and long, bushy tails. They are active during the daytime hours. Southern flying squirrels are smaller, only 4 inches long, and do not have tails. They have folds of skin between their front limbs and bodies, which allow them to glide between trees. These squirrels are active at night.

  • Why do I have them?Squirrel control

These destructive pests frequently nest in buildings. They will invade homes any time of year, but usually venture inside during the fall when they are looking for a cozy den or new food source. Like, mice, rats and other rodents, squirrels will gnaw on wood to keep their constantly growing teeth sharp and at the proper length. They will chew through wooden siding, soffits and roofs to get inside. They will also gain entry under garage or shed doors, crawl space vents, chimney stacks or pet doors. Many burrow under man-made structures like porches, decks and sheds. They may also harbor in wood piles, brush, compost piles, stacks of construction lumber or any other place that provides an undisturbed shelter.

  • Are they dangerous?

When they come into contact with humans, squirrels can pose a significant health risk. Squirrels bring fleas, ticks, mites, worms and other harmful parasites into homes. They foul attics and crawl spaces with their urine and feces, which are vectors for harmful, sometimes fatal diseases. If threatened or protecting their young, squirrels may attack humans and some can transmit rabies. They also can chew on electrical wires posing a serious fire hazard.

  • How do I get rid of squirrels?

Getting rid of squirrels is a difficult process and one that should be left to the professionals. A Raifsnider professional will design a customized squirrel control program that fits the specific needs of your property, with the goal of humanely trapping and relocating all of these nuisance rodents.

  • Can I do it myself?

Attempting to evict wildlife, including squirrels, by an untrained professional often proves to be difficult as well as very dangerous. Raifsnider professionals are trained in identifying wildlife problems, conditions that allow them to thrive and will implement effective measures to remove any existing wildlife as well as prevent future problems from occurring. Many do-it-yourself remedies, including traps, to rid your property of squirrels simply do not work. Remember – if misused or mixed improperly, do-it-yourself measures can be very dangerous to people, pets or plants.

  • Is the treatment safe?

The pest professionals at Raifsnider's  will first confirm the presence of squirrels in your home or business, and then create an animal control plan that will eliminate your pest problem quickly and in an environmentally responsible manner. Before any treatments begin, our inspectors will consult with you regarding your children, pets, and gardens and then based on your current situation; they will then customize a treatment plan specifically for you.

  • How soon can you get here?

Raifsnider's  is committed to helping you as soon as possible. In most cases, we can respond the same or very next day.

  • How can I prevent this in the future?

Many problems with squirrels and other wild animals can be difficult to prevent, but homeowners can implement a few simple things to help discourage them from entering your home such as:

  •     Inspect the perimeter, soffit, fascia and the roof of your home regularly

  •     Seal any potential entry holes

  •     Screen crawl space and attic vents and place a cap on your chimney

  •     Be on the lookout for signs of animal burrowing or activity when you mow the law

  •     Locate wood piles and compost heaps well away from your home

  •     Don’t allow yard debris of leaves to pile up

  •     Install animal proof lids on outdoor trash receptacles

Often these do-it-yourself measures fail unfortunately,
so many of our customers chose a continuous Protection Program to help guard against future squirrel infestations.
